Packager's Prompt Library — 28 Ready Prompts

Copy-paste prompts for right-sizing, materials, DIM scenarios, unboxing, pack cards, damage analysis, sustainability claims, and vendor RFQs.

How to use this library

  1. Replace bracketed fields.
  2. Ask for a table + risks + test plan.
  3. Run critical SKUs through a second model (comparisons).
  4. Convert winners into a versioned pack card (fulfillment).

Geometry & right-sizing

Prompt 1 — Outer size candidates

Product: [name]. Orientation as packed: [ ]. Exact product dims L×W×H in: [ ]. Weight: [ ] lb/oz.
Fragility: [soft|rigid|fragile|liquid]. Current outer: [ ] with [void fill].
Monthly volume: [ ]. Carriers: [UPS/FedEx/USPS/other]. Constraints: [max pack time, no plastic, etc.].
Propose 3 outer-dimension candidates. For each: void strategy, estimated DIM vs actual billing posture,
pack time estimate, risks, and what to physically test first. Output as a table.

Prompt 2 — Kill the zombie box

Here is our box library (SKU, LWH, cost, when used): [paste].
Here is 30 days of order lines with product dims/weights: [paste or summarize].
Which box SKUs should we retire, merge, or add? Estimate impact on void% and SKU count.

Prompt 3 — Multipack nesting

Single-unit pack: [dims/weight/pack]. Customer often buys qty [2/4/6].
Design multipack options that reduce per-unit DIM and labor vs shipping singles. Include tape/label notes.

Protection & materials

Prompt 4 — Cushioning trade study

SKU class [A–F from guide]. Product: [ ]. Outer candidate: [ ].
Compare paper void, air pillows, bubble, foam-in-place, molded pulp, custom insert.
Rank by damage risk, material cost band, pack time, recyclability complexity, and when NOT to use.

Prompt 5 — Corrugate spec translator

Explain like I'm an ops lead: ECT vs BCT, single vs double wall, flute choices for [stacking/shipping profile].
Recommend a starting spec for [product] shipping [parcel/LTL], and list questions for my supplier.

Prompt 6 — Leak / liquid secondary containment

Bottle [size/closure]. Ship [parcel]. Design primary+secondary containment and orientation labeling.
Include failure modes (cap back-off, puncture, freeze) and a mini test plan.

Cost & DIM

Prompt 7 — DIM vs actual scenario

Outer [LWH], weight [ ]. Show dimensional weight estimates with common divisor assumptions I provide: [ ].
Tell me which rule likely bills and how much outer shrink changes the outcome. Be explicit about uncertainty.

Prompt 8 — Costed BOM draft

Build a packaging BOM for [SKU]: outer, inner, cushioning, closure, labels, inserts.
Columns: item, spec, qty, unit cost estimate band, lead time class, notes. Flag custom vs stock.

Unboxing & brand

Prompt 9 — Reveal sequence

ASP $[ ], brand voice [ ], product [ ]. Outer is already locked: [ ].
Design an unboxing sequence (max [N] components) that does not add DIM. Include copy deck and photo checklist.

Prompt 10 — Insert that earns keep rate

Draft a one-page insert: thank-you, setup, care, recycle instructions by component, support URL.
Tone: [ ]. Must not make unverifiable eco claims.

Sustainability & claims

Prompt 11 — Claim stress test

Here is our packaging claim copy: [paste].
Attack it as a skeptical customer and as a cautious counsel. Rewrite to what we can defend component-by-component.

Prompt 12 — Disposal instructions

Components: [list materials]. Top ship-to regions: [ ].
Write customer-facing disposal steps that separate wishcycling from real streams. Mark unknowns.

Damage analysis

Prompt 13 — Photo triage

Damage photos description / URLs notes: [ ]. SKU: [ ]. Current pack: [ ].
Probable failure mode ranked. Corrective pack changes ranked by cost vs risk reduction. What to test this week.

Prompt 14 — Monthly damage cluster

Here are 25 damage tickets (SKU, notes, carrier): [paste].
Cluster root causes. Propose pack rule changes and which SKUs need engineering attention vs packer training.

Fulfillment & pack cards

Prompt 15 — Pack station card

Create a one-page pack card: tools, components checklist, step sequence, torque/tape notes, photo QC,
common mistakes, time target. Audience: seasonal hire. SKU: [ ]. Pack: [ ].

Prompt 16 — 3PL handoff brief

Rewrite our pack requirements for a 3PL SOP: non-negotiables, allowed substitutions, escalation path,
brand insert rules, and audit photo requirements.

Vendors & RFQs

Prompt 17 — RFQ questions

We need [mailer/shipper/insert] for [dims], volume [ ], print [yes/no].
Generate RFQ questions covering tolerances, board grade, coatings, color, lead time, tooling, and claim support docs.

Prompt 18 — Compare two supplier quotes

Quote A: [ ]. Quote B: [ ]. Normalize units and hidden costs (plates, freight in, storage, MOQ overage).
Recommend with risk notes — not just lowest unit price.

Decision hygiene

Prompt 19 — Talk me out of custom print

We want custom printed packaging because [reason]. Volume [ ], ASP [ ], size stability [yes/no], damage rate [ ].
Argue the case against buying print now. Offer a staged alternative.

Prompt 20 — Objective function setter

Help leadership pick packaging KPIs. Current pain: [DIM/damage/labor/brand].
Propose a primary objective and two guards (e.g., damage ceiling). Explain tradeoffs in plain English.

Advanced

Prompt 21 — Retail-ready vs shipper-only

Product may sell via [DTC + retail]. Compare shipper-only vs retail-ready packaging paths for cost, scuffing, shelf presence, and reverse logistics.

Prompt 22 — Battery / edge-case labeling checklist

Product contains [battery type / aerosol / etc.]. List packaging+label questions to verify with compliance — do not invent legal conclusions.

Prompt 23 — Returns packaging

Design for product [ ] to be returned in original packaging when possible. What changes to structure/instructions improve return survival?

Prompt 24 — Kit partition logic

Kit components: [list with fragility]. Design partition approach before graphics. Call out SKUs that should ship separate.

Prompt 25 — Void % calculator assistant

Given outer LWH and product occupied volume estimate [ ], compute void%. Suggest reduction strategies that do not increase damage risk for class [ ].

Prompt 26 — Seasonal surge pack

Q4 volume spikes [Nx]. Which packaging simplifications reduce labor with least brand damage? Propose a surge BOM vs steady-state BOM.

Prompt 27 — Competitive teardown

Describe competitor unboxing: [notes/photos]. Separate brand theater from structural choices we should steal. Ignore logo envy.

Prompt 28 — Executive one-pager

Summarize our packaging opportunity: baseline DIM$, damage%, labor seconds, proposed changes, 90-day test plan, ask/budget.
Audience: non-ops CEO. One page.
