The Invoice You Feel Before You Understand
Carriers do not only charge for kilos. They charge for the space your parcel occupies on an aircraft or trailer, expressed as dimensional (DIM) weight. If DIM weight exceeds actual weight, you pay as if the box were heavier.

The Usual Formula
Most parcel networks use a version of:
DIM weight = (Length ร Width ร Height) รท DIM divisor
Units must match the divisor the carrier publishes (inches with a 139 or 166 divisor are common in US parcel land; metric systems use centimetres with their own divisors). Always check the current rate guide for your contract โ published retail divisors and account divisors can differ.
Billable weight is typically max(actual weight, DIM weight), then rounded per carrier rules.

Product cube: 8 ร 6 ร 4 in, 2.4 lb
Current shipper: 12 ร 10 ร 8 in
Billable weight is the greater of actual weight and DIM weight. With a carrier divisor of 139:
DIM = (12 ร 10 ร 8) / 139 โ 6.9 โ billed as 7 lb if actual is only 2.4 lb.
Right-size to 9 ร 7 ร 5 in (with a pulp tray):
DIM = (9 ร 7 ร 5) / 139 โ 2.3 โ billed near actual weight.
That is not a rounding trick โ it is the difference between paying for air and paying for product. Re-run the math whenever you change void fill, inserts, or retail gift boxes that nest badly.
